REDHEADED WOODPECKER

Few people would not immediately recognize this bird as the Redheaded Woodpecker in it's mating plumage.

Our story starts in Fall when a strange bird showed up in the feeder looking like a cross between a woodpecker and a Brown Headed Cowbird. There was not a hint of red on the bird. After consulting a few field guides, we determined that it was a juvenile Redhead.

It immediately took control of things and spent the Winter attempting to drive every other bird away from the feeder. We had our own unflattering names for it after awhile and started to chase IT away.

As Spring approached, the dull brown head started to take on this "beautiful red" aspect. It was really ugly now but as time went on, it turned into the striking bird seen in the first picture.

And of course, after harassing our bird feeder all Winter, it took off for points North to nest and hasn't been seen since.
