Mantid Fly

Climaciella brunnea

This fascinating insect was discovered in the living room, like so many others we have posted here.

The Mantid Fly is neither a Mantid nor a fly. It belongs to the "Net-veined Insect" order, Neuroptera and is related to the Lacewing and the Ant Lion.

Aside from it's small size (less that one inch), it has an uncanny resemblance to the Praying Mantis. The insert shows this demonstrated with the foreleg extended just like a Mantid.

Pictures of the Mantis, Ant Lion and Lacewing can be found in the Photo Index under INSECTS. PHOTO INDEX
