M101, Spiral Galaxy in Ursa Major

M101

M101 lies at a distance of about 15 million light years.

It is about 90,000 light years across, somewhat smaller than our Milky Way galaxy.

This image was a stack of 4 x 10 min exposures with the MX716 camera and the 4" scope.

M101

This image was taken with the 10" telescope and MX716 camera.

The luminence frame for the image is a stack of 4 x 20 min exposures. The color frames were single 20 min exposures binned 2 x 2 and resampled.

M101

This image was processed with AIP software and is a composite of two images. One processed by Al Kelly and one by me

His seemed a bit too red to me and mine was too blue so I combined them into something in between.

The luminence frame for the image is a stack of 5 x 10 min exposures. The color frames were single 10 min exposures binned 2 x 2 and resampled.

M101

As a comparison of interest, this color image was taken last year with the MX7C one shot color camera.

It was a single 20 minute exposure.
