GIANT LEOPARD MOTH

Ecpantheria scribonia

It's no mystery how this moth got named, both common and Latin names derive the the pattern of spots on the wings.

The "unusual" posterior results from the fact that Marilyn stepped on it in the basement before seeing it. How it got there is not obvious at all.

It is in the Tiger Moth family and related to the "Wooly Bear" which it's caterpillar closely resembles. It also shares the behavior of rolling up into a ring when disturbed.

The larva overwinters and feeds on Plantain in Spring and then spins it's cocoon.

We took this picture on Friday and it is still alive on Sunday but not real happy.
