GREEN SNAKE

Opheodrys vernalis

The Green Snake is a harmless little (22-30") snake that was once fairly common. Like so many other animals, it is becoming very rare over most of it's range as a result of development and agriculture.

We have been lucky enough to see at least one every year since we have lived out here. Usually, within a hundred feet of where we saw it the previous year. For all we know, it is the same snake.

We spotted this one on our early morning walk sunning in a shrub. I told him to wait there till I went back to get my camera and he was kind enough to oblige.

The eggs of the Green Snake hatch in only a week or two compared to most other snakes that require several months. The embryos are highly advanced before the eggs are actually laid.
