On this page we present a tour of the Bridal Veil Nebula in Cygnus. This object is so large that I do not have a single photo of the entire nebula. However, it can be broken down into two sections known as the Eastern and Western Veil. Together they form a large circle surrounding the central star that started it all.

NGC6992

The Bridal Veil Nebula is a so-called supernova remnant. It is what is left of the outer shell of a star that exploded in the distant past.

The image at the left is a wide field view of the "Eastern Veil" taken with the 4X5 AstroCam on TechPan film, through the 16" telescope. About two or three fields to the right of this object lies the "Western Veil".

We will begin our tour by examining high resolution color views of the most interesting parts of this side of the Veil.

The numbers indicate the locations of the high res images that follow.

BIG PIC

THE HORSE'S MANE

#1

Perhaps I have a vivid imagination but I see a running horse with its mane flowing back in this image.

This was a 20 min exposure with the MX7C camera and the 16" telescope.

ET's HAND #2

Moving South (down) we come to a region that looks to me like nothing less than the hand of ET. This is identified by the (2) in the wide field photo.

More vivid imagination? Perhaps but I see a hand reaching for that beer in the fridge here. You can click on the big pic for a much larger view of this photo.

The Hook #3

Moving further South we come to the bottom of this part of the nebula. I can come up with nothing more clever than what looks sort of like a hook. It is #3 on the wide field photo.

The Western Veil

The image at the left is a wide field view of the "Western Veil" taken with the 4X5 AstroCam on TechPan film, through the 16" telescope. About two or three fields to the left of this object lies the "Eastern Veil".

We continue our tour by examining high resolution color views of the most interesting parts of this side of the Veil.

The numbers identify the locations of the two areas we will explore.

The bright star in the center is 52 Cygni.

The Diamond Crown

#1

Seen in the context of the larger image, this amazing little grouping of stars, appears to me like a dimond crown in the hilt of a dagger.

This was a 20 min exposure with the MX7C camera and the 16" telescope.

The Basket Weave Nebula

#2

I find this woven texture a most dramatic display of random beauty.
