RESURRECTION LILY
Lycoris squamigera

One of the most surprising flowers we have around here is the so-called Resurrection Lilly, also known as the Naked Lilly.

What makes it surprising is that about this time (August) every year, they just pop out of the ground with no leaves or foliage of any sort.

There is nothing but bare earth, (parched by our current drought), within 5 feet of these beautiful flowers. I forgot about them and so there were not included in my twice weekly watering rounds but bloomed in spite of this neglect.

The other part of this story is that in Spring, the leaves sprout forth looking like large tulips but just wither away as though the plant gave up and died. This of course is where it gets it's common name resurrection.

As a funny aside, my mother had these growing in her garden for years and just cut down the leaves thinking they were weeds.
