M80

This globular cluster was described by Sir William Herschel in 1785 as "the richest and most condensed mass of stars which the firmament can offer to the contemplation of the astronomer". Those are heady words but perhaps in his time, or in the Southern hemisphere, light pollution would not reduce it to a fuzzball as it appears from here and in this century. I would be more inclined to apply that description to M13 in Hercules.

M80 lies at a distance of about 36,000 light years and is about 50 light years in diameter.

This image was an LRGB composit of 5 min exposures with the MX5C camera and the 16" Newt.
