HAIRY WOODPECKER

Picoides villosus

The Hairy Woodpecker is a larger version of the more common Downey Woodpecker (P. pubescens).

Both of them nest on our property and feed at the peanut feeder, occasionally at the same time. As things happen, the camera has never been handy when this occurred so we have to settle for this montage.

As a point of interest, the species epithet "pubescens" is Latin for hairy. It would be interesting to know why this is applied to the Downey instead of the Hairy.
