Lobelia cardinalis
This is a striking wild flower that adds fall color to any garden.What I find most interesting about it is the strange reproductive behavior.
It has come up every year since we planted one but we never know where and it's mundane foliage is indistinguishable from so many weeds. It is an annual and relies on last year's seeds to start over in Spring.
We never know for sure if one survived until the flowers start to form and we have never seen more than one in any year.
