M3 in CANES VENATICI

M3 contains at least a half a million stars, with an actual diameter of about 220 light years. It lies at a distance of about 40,000 light years and is approaching us at a velocity of 90 miles per second.

If the Sun were at the same distance, it would appear as a magnitude 20 star, visible only in the largest of Earth based telescopes.

This image is an RGB composite consisting of 20 second exposures taken through Red, Green and Blue filters with the MX5camera and the 16" telescope.

It is actually the first such picture I have ever taken.
