Beautiful Wood Nymph
Eudryas grata
This strange apparition was found hanging on the glass of the back door a few nights ago.
When the wings are spread for flight, it looks like lots of other moths but when folded up for rest, it well deserves it's unofficial common name, "Bird Poop Moth".
The Beautiful Wood Nymph is a member of the Owlet moth family (Noctuidae). The food plants of the larva as reported by Rings, are evening primrose, grape, fireweed, ludwigia, and loosestrife.
The moths may be active from April to August.
